Call for Papers: The European Union’s Area of Freedom, Security and Justice: Stockholm and Beyond

The School of Humanities at the University of Dundee has issued a call for papers for the conference on “The European Union’s Area of Freedom, Security and Justice: Stockholm and Beyond”, which will be organised with the support of the Lifelong Learning Programme of the European Union between 16-17 June 2014.

The conference aims to take stock of what has been achieved in the Area of Freedom, Security and Justice (AFSJ) to date in order to inform the debates on the future of this policy area.

More precisely, the conference will engage researchers and practitioners in a dialogue around two main themes:

  1. assessing the implementation of the Stockholm programme in anticipation of the adoption of its successor (the ‘Post-Stockholm Guidelines’) in the next few months, including achievements, challenges and potential ‘leftovers’;
  2. evaluating the development of the AFSJ since 1999 with regard to a broad range of issues, including policy dynamics, decision-making, instruments, external relations, the role of the various EU institutions, bodies and agencies, the role of civil society and non-governmental organisations, technological developments, and implementation.

Paper proposal should be sent to Dr Sarah Léonard (s.l.leonard@dundee.ac.uk) and Professor Christian Kaunert (c.kaunert@dundee.ac.uk) by Wednesday 30 April 2014.
